Moth As Small As A Penny

Posted by on Mar 17, 2013 in Photos | 28 Comments

My co worker and I were headed to the staff kitchen to get some coffee in the morning and we ran across this tiny moth hanging out on the door leading into the building. We both thought he was quite cool looking and thought we should try and get a picture. I had my Ollo Clip on me so I used that to take a few pictures, but you could not quite tell how small he was. My co worker had a penny in his pocket and we both thought that would be a good representation of his size. And as you can see, this moth is actually quite small. It is very cool to be able to see him this close up! Hopefully I will be able to get some other good shots like this of other living things.

I shot this with the Ollo Clip on an iPhone 4

Nice photo. It is hard to tell because it could be an immature one, but the full grown Fiery Branded Skipper is not a whole lot bigger. Here is a photo of one on a verbena: http://wp.me/a3bN4o-lq.

Gorgeous shot! I love the “fur”.

    • http://www.ryanhermann.com/ Ryan

I had no idea how much “fur” they had on their body. Also, the wings are really interesting looking as well.

      Thanks for coming by!

Thanks for letting me camp out in your blog for a little while today. I had a great time and tried to leave my campsite as good as when I arrived. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks!

That is a cool looking moth. It looks like it’s wearing a coat with a fur collar. Good idea placing a penny beside it to show it’s size. :)

Yea he is! I couldnt see any of that detail with the naked eye. Really cool to see the “horns” that he has too. It was a great idea that my co worker had to add a penny to help show his size. Thanks for commenting!

Great shot. I must get myself one of those phones!

It really has changed the way I take photos and video. I dont have to always carry around my DSLR. I also am using an Ollo Clip which slides onto my iPhone and adds a Wide Angle lens, Fisheye lense, and Macro lens. I used the Macro lens in this picture.
